Checkpoint Systems Releases Intelligent Library System Version 2.0; Features Advanced Functionality for Librarians and Patrons

THOROFARE, N.J. --(Business Wire)-- June 25, 2004 -- Checkpoint Systems, Inc., (NYSE: CKP), the leading provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to libraries, has announced the release of its Intelligent Library System (ILS) 2.0. This latest upgrade to its standard-setting collection management and security solution for libraries includes several new features that will enable libraries to meet patrons' increased demands for services without adding additional staff.

"ILS 2.0 provides even more convenience to libraries while harnessing the most advanced technology available today," said Doug Karp, General Manager - ID Products Division for Checkpoint Systems. "It reflects our long-term commitment to our library partners. We want to continue making the ILS the most complete and effective answer for libraries wishing to increase patron service in a cost-effective and efficient manner." Karp adds that more than 100 libraries nationwide have installed the Intelligent Library System since its debut.

Among the many highlights of this feature-rich system are several improvements that directly benefit library staff and patrons:

-- A quicker and more efficient conversion system, using a non-contact Circulation Circuit station capable of tagging more than 200 items per hour

-- A Staff Assist Self-Checkout, enabling one staff member to monitor several Patron Self-Checkouts from a single workstation, without requiring extra hardware.

-- A Patron Self-Checkout Station, offering prompts and messages in up to six languages, without staff assistance or need for translations

-- A Patron Self-Checkout kiosk available in a variety of finishes to complement any library's decor

"The latest version of our Intelligent Library System includes up-to-the-minute technology that will benefit libraries and patrons tremendously," notes Karp. "ILS 2.0 offers a way for libraries to streamline operations without sacrificing convenience to patrons."

About the Intelligent Library System(R)

The Intelligent Library System(TM) speeds up the materials checkout process by providing a swift, one-step motion for issuing materials, simultaneously updating the information in

the library's circulation system and electronically deactivating security. After installing the ILS system, libraries have realized significant operational improvements by reducing materials handling time by as much as 75%. The ILS also allows for individual self check-out, enhanced security, circulation management, and efficient inventory, all integrated into a single system.

The ILS employs a single technology supporting both material handling and security applications, and is based on technology developed by Checkpoint specifically for libraries. It functions via a unique RFID circulation circuit(TM) placed on or inside the items. This circuit operates within its own local network (LAN) of RFID readers placed at appropriate locations throughout the library, including the library entry/exit where it functions as a security alert, triggering an alarm when books are removed from the library without permission. The ILS processes up to 20 items a second making it the fastest system available for libraries.

The ILS's Patron Self-Checkout Station lets patrons check out items from the library in a matter of seconds. To do this, they simply place their items on the self-checkout station, touch the monitor, and wave their patron card in front of the system. A receipt for the items being checked out is automatically generated by the systems, and the patron can exit the library.
