New ISO 15693-Compliant Contactless Memory from STMicroelectronics Will Reduce Costs for Object Tracking Applications
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has introduced a very low cost ‘long range’ contactless memory intended for high volume applications in supply chain management, e-commerce and access control. The LRI64 is a 64-bit, One Time Programmable (OTP) user memory with an additional 64-bit read-only Unique Identification number (UID). The new device complies with the ISO 15693 standard for 13.56MHz contactless products, and fully supports the ISO anti-collision mechanism.
Built using a highly reliable and mature CMOS technology with embedded EPROM, the LRI64 is well-suited to address high volume, cost-driven markets. It is organized as 16 blocks of 8 bits, of which the first eight rows contain the 64 read-only UID bits; under certain conditions, ST can make part of this UID number programmable by the end user. The LRI64 enters its operational mode only when the UID is completely and properly programmed. It includes an internal tuning capacitor, and KILL command. The memory supports the AFI register that allows operation of the anti-collision sequence; anti-collision schemes are required to handle the situation where several contactless memories are within range of the same reader, for example in a retail situation. A 56-bit space remains available for the user as a write once, read many area (WORM). Its 128-bits total memory size allows the LRI64 to support and store a 96 EPC (Electronic Product Code) data coding on demand. With 8-bit granularity and OTP the LRI64 is particularly suited to ‘Track and Trace’, as well as to supply chain management applications.
It is also a good choice for e-commerce and long range access control systems; ISO 15693 provides for operation at up to 1.5m from the reader. Its non-volatile memory technology features 40 year data retention to support long life application requirements. This new memory expands ST’s RFID portfolio, which also includes the LRI512 – a 512 user bits ISO 15693 device. Samples of LRI64 are available now and volume production is expected by the end of May 2004. US pricing for the LRI64 is US$0.10 in quantities of 1 million units. Both LRI64 and LRI512 can be delivered in various formats including thin un-sawn wafers, sawn and bumped wafers, or as inlays. The LRI64 contactless memory allows RFID to enter new RF bar-coding applications with a unique combination of features and unprecedented cost-effectiveness.
