Massachusetts Software Council Names Former Upromise President And CEO George Bell Chairman

Council Membership Elects New Trustees at 2005 Annual Meeting

The Massachusetts Software Council, the leading technology trade association in the state, has named George Bell, board member and former president and CEO of Upromise, chairman of the Council's Board of Trustees. The announcement came during the Council's 2005 Annual Meeting and Business/Economic Outlook, held today at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge.


Bell has been involved in the creation, marketing, circulation and revenue generation of consumer businesses for 25 years. For the past four years, he has helped shape Upromise into the country's largest privately-funded non-governmental service helping families save for college. Previously, Bell was chairman and CEO of Excite@Home, where he shepherded the company through massive growth, evolving from 23 employees to more than 3,000 worldwide, leading to a groundbreaking $7 billion 1999 merger of Excite and @Home.

Earlier, Bell helped launch The Outdoor Life Network, a specialty cable channel. He was formerly a senior vice president for Times Mirror Magazines, and is an Emmy Award winning producer and writer of adventure documentaries for such media as ABC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. Bell also serves as a board member of Harris Interactive (NASDAQ: HPOL). Prior to his new post for the Massachusetts Software Council, Bell served as vice-chairman.

The Mass Software Council also announced today new officer and board member appointments. Gail Goodman, CEO of ConstantContact, has been named secretary, and Jim Daniell, a partner with Echelon Partners, assumes the post of treasurer. Newly elected Board members include; Helen Grenier, co-founder and chairwoman, iRobot; Jack Messman, chairman and CEO, Novell; Dr. Robert Metcalfe, general partner, Polaris; Dr. Sanjay Sarma, CTO, Oat Systems; Greg Schmergel, co founder, president and CEO, Nantero; and Dr. Jack Wilson, president, University of Massachusetts.
