Launch: Brix’s Free Self-Serve IP Video Quality Testing Portal
BY JOHANNE TORRES
VoIP quality testing provider Brix Networks today launched TestYourVideo.com, a free, self-service, testing Web portal that enables users to independently measure the quality they are receiving from their interactive or streaming IP-based video services.
The Chelmsford, MA-based company launched a similar free voice quality Web portal TestYourVoIP.com a year ago. Brix said it lunched the new site in response to users who have also asked for help in diagnosing a variety of common IP video quality problems, such as video content that appears blurry, freezes repeatedly, or looks blocky.
The new portal is said to be able to help subscribers and service providers determine whether the source of user problems can be attributed to video end point or player capabilities, configuration issues, or impairments within a provider’s network. Similar to its predecessor, the new portal provides total service testing across all the areas that impact a user’s experience: signaling quality, delivery quality, and overall video session quality.
The Brix Video Quality Index (VQI) incorporates the impact of network transmission quality, one of what the company believes are the most important factors contributing to video quality, and quantifies the impact of factors such as latency, packet loss, jitter, packet discards, buffering, and rebuffering events. The Brix VQI measures video quality on a scale of 1-10, with higher scores reflecting fewer impairments and a greater likelihood of overall user satisfaction.
“In recent months, providers have announced a number of interactive and streaming video services. While consumers are intrigued, they still have significant concerns about performance and reliability,” observed Laura Holly, product line manager, at Brix Networks. “For example, network delay has a considerable impact on the quality of interactive video services like video telephony, conferencing, gaming, and video chat, while buffering and rebuffering really wreak havoc on streaming applications like IP TV and video on demand.”
TestYourVideo.com is supported by an IP performance management system from Brix Networks. The Brix System consists of distributed test points, called Verifiers that communicate with, and are managed by, the BrixWorx central-site software application.
Today’s announcement follows Birx’s recent deal with SupportSoft, Inc., a provider of Real-Time Service Management software. The companies teamed up to integrate the SupportSoft ServiceVerify software and Brix Networks' BrixWorx software to improve VoIP customers’ experience from installation through ongoing support.
