Spartans start strong

(Times-News (Twin Falls, ID) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Feb. 24--POCATELLO -- The Minico Spartans made the trip to Holt Arena Thursday afternoon loaded for bear with 18 wrestlers qualified for the state tournament, including three No. 1 seeds.

Even so, the Spartans could definitely use a few upsets along the way for a shot at the class 4A team title.

On a day full of big performances from the team, a trio of unseeded wrestlers delivered just that.

Sophomore Brady Cooper knocked off the 189-pound third seed, junior Josh Clapier took care of the No. 4 at 140, and sophomore Nate Crane defeated the fifth seed at 112.

Behind 11 first round victories and another four in the consolation bracket, Minico finished Day 1 in first place with 43.5 points, three ahead of second place Lakeland.

"We had a great first round," said Minico head coach Brad Cooper. "We only lost a couple matches and the kids that lost fought hard. I think we've got them tuned up and ready to go. We're plum tickled by the way we got started."

All three of the Spartans' first seeds delivered dominant performances in their opening matches.

After building a 7-1 lead through one period, senior 189-pounder Wes Cooper pinned Pocatello's Alejandro Archuleta 12 seconds into the second.

"It was the third time I'd wrestled the kid and I knew what to expect," said Cooper. "We're wrestling pretty good. A couple of Skyview kids lost that we needed to. I think we're sitting pretty good as far as the team."

Senior Kurt Anderson sent Pocatello's Nate Maravilla into the consolation bracket at 3:32 of their 145-pound match, while Kevin Killoy blanked Kuna's Mike Hodges 14-0 at 140.

In other 4A action, No. 1 seeded Jerome senior Em Powell took an 8-2 nod over Rigby's Justin Welch.

"He's a real strong kid," said Powell. "The competition steps up at state. Everybody comes here to wrestle. I knew I could take him down the whole match, tire him out, and I did."

The Tigers concluded the opening day in 15th place with 15 points, while Burley finished tied for 19th with Vallivue with 10.

In 5A competition, Twin Falls wrapped up the day in 14th place with 16 team points.

Senior Kyle Smith (160) and sophomore Brent Martinez both ended their matches well inside the distance, Smith early in the second period, Martinez at the 1:17 mark.

"I came in as the third seed," said Smith. "I'm just trying to stay strong, try to stay focused and hopefully beat out the second seed (to get into) the championship."

In 3A action, Declo junior Golden Zollinger looked commanding in his bid to claim 112 pound gold after taking the 103 pound championship last year, pinning Middleton's Matt Douthit 48 seconds into their match.

"It boosts my confidence," said Zollinger. "I've been cutting a lot of weight. I wasn't feeling good and it helps to get a good match."

Class 3A District IV champion Kimberly was hot and cold most of the day, sending four wrestlers out of 13 into the quarterfinals.

"We probably lost a few matches that we shouldn't have lost and I think we got one match that we won that we shouldn't have won," said Bulldogs head coach Troy Palmer after the first round. "Hopefully we come back and wrestle a little better tonight."

They wrestled quite a bit better, picking up 13 points in consolation to move from 12th place to sixth by the end of the day.

Raft River had the best opening day out of area 2A/1A teams, finishing in a three-way tie for seventh.
