Ex-Taiwan leader Lee to postpone Japan visit to fall+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TAIPEI, March 29_(Kyodo) _ Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui has decided to postpone his visit to Japan that he hoped to schedule in May, to possibly this fall because of health problems, sources familiar with Lee said Tuesday.
Lee, 83, was hospitalized for six days from March 19 because of a common cold. He was then diagnosed with light pneumonia in addition to fatigue, the sources said, adding that doctors told him to take a rest for about three months.
Lee's aide has confirmed to Kyodo News that recent reports about his health were correct and said his condition is "stable." He also said the length of his Japan visit may be shortened.
Taiwan's Central News Agency had said Lee has planned to visit Japan for about two weeks to follow the path of the legendary haiku poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) as written in his "Oku no hosomichi" five-month walking journey, visiting Nikko, Matsushima and other places associated with the poet.
Lee has also been considering speaking at Akita International University and in Tokyo.
The former Taiwan leader last visited Japan in late 2004 when he made a weeklong tour of Kanazawa, Nagoya and Kyoto, after Japan granted a tourist visa to him amid protests from China.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe has said the government will judge its actions appropriately in accordance with the purpose of the visit.
China regards Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory waiting to be reunited with the mainland, by military force if necessary.
