Area News Briefs: Remember to change batteries, set clocks
(Sun Journal (New Bern, NC)(KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Apr. 1--There will be some changes made this weekend.
Clocks will be set forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday as daylight saving time begins.
Henry Watson, New Bern fire marshal, is reminding residents and businesses that the time change is a good reminder to check smoke alarms and change the batteries.
He said 9-volt batteries in smoke detectors should be replaced.
"They are not long-life batteries," Watson said.
He said smoke detectors 10 years or older should also be replaced.
For seniors in New Bern, Watson said fire and rescue will help in changing the batteries.
Watson said those who can't afford batteries can be qualified at the local department of social services or health department.
Those needing new smoke detectors but can't afford them may contact the two county agencies or the Department of Social Security.
