China's defense minister warns Taiwan over talk of independence+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)KUALA LUMPUR, April 10_(Kyodo) _ Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan told Malaysian Defense Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Monday that China will never allow Taiwan to seek independence.
Cao, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur earlier in the day for a three-day visit, met with Najib, concurrently deputy prime minister.
"He reiterated China's position that China will not allow the declaration of independence of Taiwan," Najib said after the meeting.
"It will be deemed as trying to secede from China," Najib said. "China is committed to the peaceful reunification with Taiwan in continuance with its 'one-China-two-system' policy."
Taiwan's relationship with China has deteriorated under pro-independence President Chen Shui-bian, who in February angered Beijing when he scrapped a council on unification with the mainland.
Malaysia has stood by its one-China policy and has barred its ministers from making official visits to Taiwan.
On bilateral issues, both countries stressed the need to strengthen cooperation.
Najib said Cao proposed conducting non-conventional maritime exercises like search and rescue.
Before arriving in Malaysia, Cao visited North Korea and Vietnam. He will also visit Singapore and South Korea.
