NEC's Core 2 Duo laptops

(New Straits Times Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) NEC has launched the Versa E6210 and E6200 in conjunction with the launch of the Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor.

These latest additions to the Versa family feature a 14.1-inch wide- screen (dubbed WXGA with Super Shine View), latchless liquid crystal display panel, an Eco button for one-touch power-saving mode, Reduction of Hazardous Substances compliance and Windows Vista-capable.

Other model-specific features are NVidia's GeForce Go 7300, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, fingerprint recognition technology and a remote controller that can slot inside the Express Card slot.

NEC is marketing its latest Versa line-up as one-touch, video conferencing-enabled notebooks with a built-in Skype button and well- hidden built-in Webcam.

The feature is merely a collaboration with Skype Ltd on the design; assumingly since there is no licensing agreement with Skype, the notebooks don't ship with a pre-loaded copy of Skype.

According to NEC Computer Asia Pacific's managing director, sales South Asia and Southeast Asia Wu Tengguo, the version might not be up-to-date by the time customers get their hands on it. So, customers will need to download and install the free application from the Skype Web site to start enjoying free one-touch video-conferencing with other Skype users. No other promotional packages with Skype exist.

The latest Versa notebooks are designed by Jun Katsunuma, who is responsible for the simple and unique lines of new notebooks dubbed as the "fa.cid" design. Among others, the design includes a leather-lookalike top panel that is elegant yet not too loud, accentuated with a small metallic badge, symmetric design along with round corners and sharp designs.

At the moment, the notebooks are only available in either black or brown, which hints squarely at the young executive market.

NEC is projecting that 80 per cent of its bulk sales will be made up of the Intel Core 2 Duo notebooks in the fourth quarter.

The latest Versa lineup retails from RM4,000 depending on the configurations and should be available from NEC channel partners throughout the country.
