GlobalNet signs Thomson for VoIP backup

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Honduran internet provider GlobalNet Honduras will use digital video technologies company Thomson (NYSE: TMS) to backup its soon-to-be launched VoIP over DSL network, GlobalNet said in a statement.

GlobalNet will use Thomson's Cirpack softswitch solutions for corporate and residential services to launch service this month. GlobalNet expects to reach 25,0000 VoIP subscribers by year-end.

The company sees an increased demand for internet service and potential for broadband over DSL as cable have insufficient capacity to satisfy current growth rates.

"Honduras is a country of 7.4 million inhabitants but there are still only half a million cable lines in service and the waiting list is long. We can see that there is enormous market potential," GlobalNet executive director Oscar Flores said in the statement.

According to the statement, GlobalNet expects to use the same platforms to offer a complete triple play service in the future.
