Crackdown on counterfeiters

An undercover operation called "Operation Taxi," launched five months by the Ankara Smuggling and Organized Crime Office upon a taxi driver's complaint of a counterfeit fare, was completed on Wednesday with two raids.

A printing house where counterfeit money was being produced was found together with a large amount of counterfeit foreign currency and new Turkish lira. Fourteen people have been taken into custody.

The Ankara Smuggling and Organized Crime Office sent a team to Istanbul to investigate the counterfeit money that was uncovered, cooperating with the Istanbul police department in raiding two warehouses where they found two printing presses and other counterfeit material. In searches carried out in the homes of suspects taken into custody, over $3 million, 152,000 euros and YTL 169,540 were recovered all of it counterfeit.


Police sources said the counterfeiters who were caught had been printing approximately YTL 50,000 and $100,000 a day and spread the money throughout the country. Authorities said the counterfeit banknotes were of high quality and thus difficult to detect.
