ABS-CBN talents most 'well liked' at Anak TV Awards

(Business World (Philippines) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Broadcast networks set aside their differences and heated ratings wars, as they jointly honored television programs, and personalities that champion wholesome entertainment, and family values.

The Seventh Anak TV - Seal Awards were handed out last Tuesday, with child-friendly programs from all local networks getting citations from a panel of more than 3,000 Filipinos polled nationwide.

But it was the Lopez-led ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. that dominated this year's awards, romping away with the top honors, for the "Most Well- Liked Programs for 2007", and "Most Admired" male and female personalities of the year.

ABS-CBN's nightly primetime newscast TV Patrol World was voted as the Most Well-Liked Program, followed by the daily game show Pilipinas, Game KNB?, which is also aired over ABS-CBN.

Rival TV station GMA Network, Inc. had the third and fourth most well- liked programs in the country, the primetime newscast 24 Oras and the public service show Wish Ko Lang, respectively.

Landing on the fifth spot was ABS-CBN's Sunday night magazine show Rated K, followed by ABS-CBN's long-running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Completing the list of the top 10 well-liked shows for 2007 were GMA's public affairs show Imbestigador, ABS-CBN's nightly soap opera Maging Sino Ka Man, ABS-CBN's game show Kapamilya Deal or No Deal and GMA's children's show Art Angel.

Meanwhile, TV Patrol World's anchorman Julius Babao was voted as the Most Admired Male Television personality, followed by ace newscaster from GMA, Mike Enriquez.

"I do not want to sound patronizing. I am not saying this because I am here. But there are awards that you receive that are just close to your heart. And for me, Anak TV is one of that," Mr. Enriquez said when accepting the award.

Claiming the third spot was singer Gary Valenciano, followed by dramatic actors John Lloyd Cruz, Piolo Pascual and Aga Muhlach respectively. In seventh place was game show host Edu Manzano, followed by morning show anchor Arnold Clavio, newscaster Ted Failon, and actor Sam Milby.

For the female category, veteran broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez received the most votes as the "Most Admired Television Personality" for this year.

"This award is a clear reminder of our responsibility as TV personalities to mind what we say and do because children are watching," Ms. Sanchez told reporters in the vernacular.

Following Ms. Sanchez on the list, was newscaster and talk show host Mel Tiangco, singer-actress Sharon Cuneta, morning show host Christine Bersola-Babao, and young actress Angel Locsin.

Completing the top 10 were ace broadcast journalists Jessica Soho, Karen Davila, and Bernadette Sembrano, and recording artists and TV personalities Sarah Geronimo and Toni Gonzaga.

Southeast Asian Foundation for Children and Television (SEAFCTV) President Edgardo Roces explained that the awards are proof of the popularity of the TV shows and personalities nationwide. "More than 60% of those surveyed are located outside Metro Manila," he told reporters. The foundation gives out the Anak TV awards.

But more than a barometer of popularity, Mr. Roces noted that the results of the national survey shows which TV shows and personalities have the support of Filipino children, and families.

SEAFCTV also announced the shows that received the Anak TV seal for this year. Mr. Roces explained that the Anak TV seals signify that the shows are child-sensitive, and family oriented.

"The seal can now be displayed during the airing of the program as a guide to parents and educators that the program has been screened not just by the industry or a government institution but by many stakeholders, not only in Metro Manila but nationwide," he said.

"It is hoped that teachers and parents will rally behind the chosen programs, encouraging children to view them, increasing popular viewership, which will hopefully translate to better revenues for such responsibly made programs," he added.
