Flowers now in demand

ILOILO CITY, Oct 28, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
A few days yet from All Saints Day, but the locally grown flowers are already almost running out and reserved by those who intend to bring it to the tombs of their dead loved ones.

Upon inquiry with the Department of Agriculture-Regional Integrated Agricultural Research Center for Lowland Rain-fed (DA-RIARC-LR) which sells flowers cultivated in the techno-demo farm, Agricultural Technician Evelyn Villavicencio, said that their flowers have been reserved already.

She said that they have been cultivating Anthurium and 12 varieties of Heliconia, but all of these have already buyers and to those still calling for reservation they have to beg off.

The DA-RIARC-LR headed by Maximo A. Mana-ay, as center head, is based in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo. Its mandate is to serve as the nerve center for the production and distribution of superior and high quality planting materials and show window of techno-demo and research trials for lowland rainfed commodities and high value commercial crops.

As part of its distribution, it has generated a cumulative of P36,287.50 from Dec. 21, 2007 to Oct. 22, 2008 only from its cut flower production.

Villavicencio, said that because of the demand for cut flowers this Nov. 1 she anticipates a further increase in their cash income this year.

She further said that because of the locally grown flowers not yet sufficient to meet the demand that other flower retailers still order from Cebu and Baguio City which are being sold in the local markets.LBV/AJP/vlo
