Area legislators named to various committees

(St. Joseph News-Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 17--JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Four Northwest Missouri Republicans grabbed leadership roles this week in the Missouri House of Representatives.

House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin, has selected Rep. Jason Brown, R-Platte City, to serve as chairman of the Local Government Committee and Rep. Dr. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, as chairman of the HealthCare Transformation Committee.

Mr. Richard also named Rep. Jim Guest, R-King City, to lead the new Real ID and Personal Privacy Committee, while Rep. Mike Thomson, R-Maryville, will chair an appropriations committee that focuses on education issues.

In addition to his chairmanship, Mr. Brown also will serve on a veterans committee and the Special Committee on Urban Issues.

Dr. Schaaf also will serve on budget and health care policy committees, along with the Special Committee on Health Insurance.

Mr. Guest also will be a member of health care policy and agribusiness committees. Mr. Thomson will work on budget, elementary and secondary education and agribusiness committees.

First-term Rep. Mike Lair, R-Chillicothe, has been named to the appropriations-education, corrections, health care transformation and retirement committees. Freshman Rep. Casey Guernsey, R-Bethany, will weigh in on the agribusiness, energy and environment and health care transformation committees.


House Minority Floor Leader Paul LeVota made the Democrats' assignments to standing committees, while Mr. Richard selected minority members for all special committees.

Rep. Ed Wildberger, D-St. Joseph, will serve on the administration and accounts, homeland security and budget committees.

Rep. Martin Rucker, D-St. Joseph, will serve on the Senior Citizens Advocacy Committee and the Special Committee on Emerging Issues on Agriculture Policy and the Special Committee on Energy and Environment.

Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, hasn't completed his committee assignments.
