QTEL TENDERS FOR INDOSAT: Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is to begin two tender offers in Indonesia and the US for shares in PT Indosat Tbk (Indosat). The shares represent about 24.19 percent of Indosat's total issued and outstanding shares. The mandatory tender offers were triggered by Qtel's earlier indirect acquisition of a 40.81 percent stake in Indosat in June 2008.
BATELCO INKS $225M DEAL: Bahrain Telecommunications Co (Batelco) is to buy 49 percent of Indian mobile telephone operator S Tel Ltd for $225m. S Tel operates in northern India, where it has licences to offer mobile phone services in six Indian states. This is the latest in a string of recent acquisitions by Gulf operators. Batelco said it was partnering with Millennium Private Equity to acquire the stake in S Tel.
STC SIGNS INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL: Saudi Telecom Company has signed telecommunications infrastructure services agreements with Ahmad Abdullah Al-Klebi & Partners Real Estate Company and Aqar Al-Nokhbah Company. The agreements are for two real state developments covering more than 1,000,000 square metres.
EMISSIONS BY ETISALAT, DU ARE LOW, SAYS REPORT: The base stations of both the UAE leading mobile operators, Etisalat and Du don't emit electro-magnetic fields beyond the permissible levels, according to the Non-Ionising Radiation Technical Survey Project. The survey concluded that both operators adhere to international best practices. The survey was carried out by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in 2008.
QTEL TO BEGIN INDOSAT SHARES TENDER JAN 20: Qatar Telecommunications (Qtel) has said it would begin tender offers for shares in Indonesian telecoms firm PT Indosat on Tuesday to lift its stake to 65 percent, the maximum allowed. Indonesia limits foreign ownership in the telecommunication sector to a maximum of 65 percent for mobile phone operators and 49 percent for fixed-line operators, reported Reuters.
VIVA LAUNCHES MOBILE BROADBAND: Kuwait's latest telecoms company, Viva has launched its mobile broadband service in Kuwait, offering a speed of up to 7.2 Mbps. The company is offering prospective subscribers within the month of January to unlimited internet access, as well as a free USB modem and Data SIM card.
