CNO Speaks at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh

Oct 23, 2009 (DEFENSE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- PITTSBURGH, Pa. (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) delivered remarks at Carnegie Mellon University about "America's Global Navy: In the Middle East and Beyond," Oct. 21.

Adm. Gary Roughead, CNO, met with students and faculty, along with the university's president, Dr. Jared Cohon to discuss computer science, future technology and the way ahead for the Navy.

The CNO talked about today's Navy and the current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and the important work Sailors, Marines and other service members are contributing to the fight.

"We have about 24,000 Sailors in the Middle East. And they are not all on ships. In fact, we have more Sailors on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan - 13,600 to be exact - who are there and I call them sand Sailors because we have been in that fight with the Army and Marine Corps and the other services for some time," said Roughead. "So, on any given day, 52,000 Sailors roughly, are deployed around the world doing the work of a nation." Roughead also talked about important elements of the maritime strategy and the capabilities to be a global Navy, to be a deterrent force, to project power and maintain sea control.

"We do everyone of those capabilities everyday somewhere in the world," said Roughead. "And that's what you get when you invest in a global capable, forward Navy." CNO also expressed the vital role the maritime strategy has played in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and how the Navy is engaged in maritime partnerships strengthening the steady flow of commerce, communication and resources around the globe.

"We became proactive with humanitarian assistance. So every year, we support operations in the Pacific, in Africa and in South America and in four years time, from our ships- this is not work that maybe was done by other organizations or groups or services ashore - but from our ships in fours years, we have touched a half a million patients," said Roughead.

He also discussed the strength of maritime partnerships and how navies around the world are conducting counter piracy operations and working together to increase the steady flow of commerce, communication and resources around the globe.

Roughead's lecture is part of the Carnegie Mellon International Relations and Politics Program's Speaker Series and is co-sponsored by the university's College of Engineering and Heinz College.
