Granada receives grant for new police officer

Nov 25, 2009 (The Lamar Ledger - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The police department for the town of Granada is set to double in the near future. The community of approximately 650 full time residents received over $126,000 from two grants from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program earlier this year to increase and modernize its police department. Currently the department consists of one individual.

The Modernization Project grant funding is from the JAG 2009 Recovery Act, which awarded the Granada Police Department $120,514 for the hiring of one additional police officer; purchase of another patrol vehicle, including the installation of equipment; one thermal vision camera; two mobile data terminals (MDT's) with software and one in-building amplifier. Additionally the department received $6,464 in the form of a Technology Improvement Project grant from JAG, Division of Criminal Justice, the Department of Public Safety and the Governor's office. The grant is intended for the purchase of an additional thermal camera.

Police Chief Dave Dougherty said the grant will allow the department to provide additional coverage for the community as well as lessen the burden on the department's lone current employee. Dougherty, who has served as the police chief since November 2008, noted that the department has taken approximately 350 calls year to date. He said the incidents have ranged in a wide spectrum from traffic violations to sexual assault of a minor.

The Granada Police Department was one of 77 agencies that received funding out of 200 that applied.
