BRIEF: Student draw-a-thon raises funds for artists
WARRENSBURG, Mar 01, 2010 (The Daily Star-Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
In lighting suitable for Goya, but with the enthusiasm of Hiro Yamagata, students and supporters attended a draw-a-thon Saturday at the University of Central Missouri.
Student Artist Coalition Vice President Chad Collins, Grandview, said the fundraiser defrays the cost for artists on campus.
"Models can cost $10 an hour," he said.
Club members also use the funds to make field trips to expand their knowledge in places including Chicago.
In addition to the Draw-a-Thon, the coalition raises funds by offering models to assist artists from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at a cost of $1 an hour.
"We're open to the public," Jeff Porter, Raytown, said, and shamelessly plugged another public art spot, Cafe Blackadder, 121 N. Holden, where his work can be seen.
The evening modeling program is for serious artists only. Event organizers expect artists to bring their own supplies and to have the maturity to work with occasional nude models, Collins said.
"They have to come to draw," he said.
Artists can work in paint, pastels, pencil or other art forms.
"It's any medium they want to work in," Collins said.
