ASTAC to use Tecore solution for Prudhoe Bay coverage
(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telecoms network equipment supplier Tecore Networks announced Friday that it has been selected by the Arctic Slope Telephone Association Cooperative (ASTAC) to supply core and radio access network (RAN) products that will enable ASTAC to expand its GSM network to cover Prudhoe Bay, a large North American oil field located on the north coast of Alaska.
The company said that although the official population of the area is just 5, at any one time there are several thousand transient oil workers in the area servicing the oil fields around the bay. The GSM network must therefore support a significant number of roaming users and withstand the severe weather in the area. IN addition, to reduce installation costs, ASTAC will be using the Farsight extended range capability of the Tecore iBSS RAN, which will allow each base station to cover a radius of up to 120km, several times the area which standard base stations are able to cover. This is possible because of the low population density in the area.
Climatic conditions in Prudhoe Bay mandate that construction is only possible during winter months, when the tundra is frozen hard enough to allow construction to take place. To facilitate the tight schedule this imposes, Tecore undertook to configure and test each component of the installation in its labs, connecting the equipment over IP to the ASTAC core in Anchorage to complete the tests, according to Tecore.
No financial details of the contract were disclosed.
