ZTE Corporation: ZTE Increases Patent Applications By 50% In 2009 Despite Global Economic Downturn

Shenzhen, China, Mar 15, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- ZTE Corporation ("ZTE") (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced that The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has released the international (open) patent application figures for 2009. China was ranked 5th, moving up one place up from 2008, with a rapid increase in patent applications. ZTE increased patents filed by 50% in 2009, despite the number of WIPO applications worldwide dropping for the first time in 30 years.

ZTE pushed ahead of many major companies in intellectual property in 2009, with a substantial increase in global patent applications. WIPO data shows that ZTE's international open patent applications reached 502 in 2009, 173 more than 2008. ZTE applied for 1,164 international patents in 2009, with many still being processed by WIPO.

China continues to strengthen its innovation position with the fastest patent growth among major countries, up 30% year-on-year amidst a downturn in IP globally. WIPO record shows that it received a total of 155,900 international patent applications in 2009, with leading countries United Stated, Japan, Germany, South Korea and China respectively. Based on China's international patent application growth, the Financial Times predicts that China will replace the United States as the leading global scientific intellectual property holder by 2020.

"ZTE has persistently pursued a principle of combining patent applications with market demand, product R&D and standards research rather than an eye for merely numerical increases in patent applications," said Mr. Guo Xiaoming, ZTE's Global Intellectual Property Director. "We'll continue to bring in more state-of-the-art technologies to drive the development of the global telecoms industry." In recent years, Chinese enterprises have attached great importance to implementing market-oriented corporate strategy, centred on patent quality improvement, leading to greater activity on the international patent and standards stage. ZTE has organised a total of 22 major international standardisation conferences, including the 3GPP2, IEEE802.16 and TISPAN, which were held by a Chinese enterprise for the first time with ZTE. Through these conferences, Chinese enterprises have demonstrated the innovation and strength of China within the telecom and communications industry.

ZTE's primary focus is on wireless products, accounting for more than 45% of 2009 patents filed, covering 3G and 4G technologies. In addition, ZTE has filed a large number of international patents in the terminal, access, bearer network, and chipset technology fields. More than 90% of the total 25,000 patents filed by ZTE are invention patents, including over 1,700 LTE/SAE patents. ZTE is positioned to become one of the leading owners of LTE/SAE patents.

ZTE is committed to working cohesively with industry players to drive advances in the telecoms market. The company is a member of over 70 international standardisation organisations and forums, and has submitted over 12,000 drafts to ITU-T, ITU-R, 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI, IEEE, OMA, IETF and other international standardisation organisations. Now 30 experts from ZTE hold chairperson and reporter positions in international standardisation organisations. ZTE has also won the editor position and drafting rights for over 80 international standards.
