JTG and other major operators to launch telecom cable in July

AMMAN, Jun 14, 2010 (Jordan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Jordan Telecom Group (JTG) in cooperation with three major operators in Syria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey is taking preparations for launching a telecom cable early July.


Nayla Khawam, chief executive officer of Jordan Telecom Group (Orange), said in remarks to the press Sunday that the land cable will link the four countries together, adding it will connect them with Asia through Jeddah and with Europe through Turkey.

Khawam said the project was completed and is awaiting the official launch on July 1st, adding that the cable will enhance internet and international calls services.

"The cable will enhance the traffic of international calls and internet in the Kingdom as it represents another alternative route, in addition to the submarine cables the JTG uses currently," she said in her remarks on the sidelines of a press conference Sunday to announce the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) ICT Forum 2010 that will begin in Amman in October.

The cable, she added, will enhance internet services, especially in cases of emergencies when there are cuts in the submarine cables that cause disruptions in the internet services. She added that the launch of a new cable is likely to lead to a reduction in internet disruptions.

According to official figures, mobile penetration in Jordan exceeds 101 per cent, while internet penetration in the Kingdom stands currently at about 30 per cent.
