'ISPA delivers industry roadmap to UK govt'
Jul 22, 2010 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) --
The UK ISPA has called on the government to better coordinate its
internet policymaking across government departments. The recommendation
is one of eight published in the ISPA's Roadmap for the Internet,
addressed to government, MPs and the industry. In addition to better
coordination, the ISPA wants the government to defend the intermediary
status of internet services providers, helping the sector avoid any
legal liability in copyright-infringement suits, and promote more
"innovative" online content distribution models. On tapping
legislation, the group called for a "proportionate approach" that
balances the requirements of law enforcement, demands on communication
providers and users' right to privacy. The industry also wants a a
clear regulatory environment on broadband, which "rewards investment in
digital infrastructure to ensure access to faster broadband for all".
This should include a review of the current treatment of dark fibre
assets with the aim of reducing the obstacles to small scale
deployments of dark fibre networks. In addition, the government should
change procurement strategies to encourage future proofed solutions and
the adoption of new technologies, such as IPv6. Finally, the ISPA
called for more adequate resources for public bodies to deal with
online safety issues.
