NACC Students to Intern at Bellefonte Site
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) RAINSVILLE, Ala., Aug. 31 -- Northeast Alabama Community College issued the following news release:
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has initiated an internship program with Northeast Alabama Community College for students majoring in Drafting & Design Technology (DDT), according to Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. Students selected for the program will continue their studies at Northeast, but also will perform drafting and design duties at TVA's Bellefonte Nuclear facility in Jackson County. "We are optimistic that if the renewal of the construction and subsequent operation of the Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant occurs as is anticipated that this partnership will be just the beginning of workforce opportunities for our students," Campbell stated.
The program, called CADNet, is a school-to-work program that provides students with industry experience while providing low-cost, high-quality services for CADNet sponsor organizations. As the sponsor, TVA will employ the students to perform work such as converting drawings to electronic formats. College officials anticipate that initially fifteen or twenty students will be involved in the internship program.
"I am excited about the opportunity for our students," stated Dr. Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at NACC. "What better opportunity could our students have than to work directly with TVA on real-world drawings that may be used in the construction of a nuclear power plant?"
Students considered for the program undergo an intensive screening process. TVA officials will interview eligible students early in September and those chosen are expected to start at Bellefonte in October. Students from the Earnest Pruett Center of Technology, which offers dual enrollment programs for its students with Northeast, also will have the opportunity to work in this internship program with TVA.
"We greatly appreciate TVA officials providing the college and our students with this opportunity," Campbell said. "Mr. Dan Sanchez in particular has been a great help to us in setting this up. Mr. Sanchez serves as the Training Manager for TVA Nuclear Generation, Development and Construction." Campbell added that this internship program shows a very real commitment on the part of TVA to see that area residents have the chance to obtain some excellent employment opportunities.
The internship program with TVA very well complements the college's efforts to provide a modern, state-of-the-art DDT program at Northeast. The college already has a purchase agreement with AutoDesk(R) software that allows students to use the latest versions of design software. Students at Northeast are trained not only in architectural drafting, but learn civil drafting, including classes in surveying and the use Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Northeast also offers courses in mechanical drafting and industrial design. To help students visualize how the products they design fit together and work, the college has purchased a 3-dimensional printer that provides rapid prototyping of 3-D designs using a type of plastic. Keith Andrews serves as the lead Instructor for the DDT program at Northeast. The program is a part of the college's Workforce Development and Job Skills Training Division, which is directed by Dr. Mike Kennamer.
