Daviess County applies for grant for siren
Sep 03, 2010 (Messenger-Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Daviess Fiscal Court agreed Thursday to apply for an $83,000 Disaster Recovery Community Development Block Grant that includes a new emergency siren at Fairview Drive and Settle Road.
That's near Brookhill, Brookhill Estates, Hunters Ridge and Lake Forest subdivisions.
Joe Berry, economic development planner for the Green River Area Development District, told county commissioners that the siren will cover a three-quarter-mile radius around the intersection.
There are between 1,400 and 1,500 homes in that area, he said.
The area is on the fringe of sirens at other locations, Berry said, but it needs better service.
The grant would also include buying a generator to be at the emergency shelter at Hall Street Baptist Church. That shelter will serve people with special needs during a disaster.
In other business
--Sandy Novick, Kenergy CEO, told commissioners that Kenergy learned during the ice storm of January 2009 that it needs a better way to communicate with its members.
The electrical cooperative has begun communicating through its website, Facebook and Twitter, he said.
An out-of-state call center has been contracted to help handle phone calls during a disaster to keep customers from getting too many busy signals, Novick said.
"We can't handle 50,000 to 60,000 calls at one time, but we're better able to communicate now," he said.
Novick said Kenergy has loans available with zero percent interest for business development in the area.
--Commissioners proclaimed September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
RonSonlyn S. Clark, director of substance abuse services for River Valley Behavioral Health, told the court that alcohol and drug abuse treatment costs $1,900 per year per person.
Incarcerating that person, she said, would cost the state $19,000.
"Treatment works," Clark said.
--The court approved a contract with Lanham Brothers Construction for $94,677, the lowest of two bids, to construct an addition to the Yelvington Fire Station.
The county will pay $42,500 of that and the fire department will pay the rest.
--And the court agreed to advertise for bids to replace a bridge on Aull Road.
Because it's a coal haul road, the state will pay $80,000 of the cost, commissioners said.
The road will be closed for five to six weeks once work begins on the bridge later this year.
--The court appointed Darrell Higginbotham to the RiverPark Center board of directors.
--Commissioner Mike Riney chaired the meeting because Judge-Executive Reid Haire was attending a conference in Boston.
