Journalist Declares Intention for 2011 Elections

Sep 06, 2010 (The Informer/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A veteran Liberian broadcast journalist, Mr. Peter Kphan Toby, has declared his intention to run for the House of Representatives for District #6, Weegbyee, Saclapea, in Nimba County in next year's general presidential elections.

Mr. Toby revealed that he will be running on the ticket of the proposed National Union for Democratic Progress (NUDP) of Nimba County Senior Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, a former rebel leader.

Speaking to journalists in Monrovia recently, Mr. Toby said his intent sprung from his quest to bring peace and reconciliation amongst the people of Nimba County, his native home.

He noted that because of the 14 years of war, Liberians have been divided saying, "I'm blessed by the Almighty God to be the one to promote peace among our people in the district." "It is true that Nimbaians are interested in development, but they will never succeed when they are not interacting with one another as when farming and fishing together prior to the civil war," the journalist argued.

Pete Toby, as he is popularly called by his admirers and citizens of the district, said he is interested in promoting sports, agriculture, education, health and other developmental aspects.

"I will want to provide in a not-too-distant future a leadership for my people so as to identify more with them; we will incorporate all, be with them, and promise not to go away from them,' he stated.

When quizzed about his contributions to his kinsmen and Liberia in general, Mr. Toby said his role in the various governments as a journalist was to promote the ideology of development, providing information relative to agriculture, socio-economic and education by bringing people together.

He then promised, if elected, to provide a reliable leadership by working with his people because he is their servant.

He also made an emphasis on the education of Liberian youths who he said are the future leaders.

He urged them to think right about whom to vote for - someone who shall go back and work with them after the electoral process shall be over.

Under his leadership, he said the district will be the first to export agricultural products en mass to Europe and the United States of America.

Mr. Toby is presently a super sophomore student of the United Methodist University UMU, majoring in Mass Communication.
